I was driving home from work through Thetford & there was this "thunk" on the aluminum body of my truck, writes Herb Detrick.
My first thought was some kid had hurled a fastball at me, but it was after midnight, so I turned the truck around to see if it was an animal I somehow did not see while I was on the lookout for deer.
And there on the double yellow centerline was a small owl looking very dazed and confused, as in:
"What the heck, buddy, why did you drive that truck right through my flight path?"

I couldn't just leave him in the road to become roadkill, so I got a chamois from the back seat and picked the bird up and set it on the far side of the guard rail and just waited.
One car came along right away, so I was glad I'd picked the bird up and moved it off the road.

It took about 10 minutes for it to regain its senses.
But it still was giving me the evil eye when we parted ways.
